Kununurra - Adventures in the Kimberley

Kununurra is the eastern gateway to the Kimberley, the home of outback adventure. Kununurra was gazetted in the early 1960’s as a service town for the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. It is now progressing rapidly through agriculture, tourism and mining.

The climate in Kununurra and the East Kimberley can be split into two seasons, ‘the wet’ and ‘the dry’.

The dry season extends from around April to October with lovely clear days, cooler nights, brilliant blue skies and magnificent sunsets. The remaining months from November to March are dominated by monsoonal weather. Conditions are hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms causing heavy rainfall, an extremely exciting time of year.

Kununurra is an ideal base for an adventure holiday using one of the many 4WD, cruise or flight operators based in the area. Visitors can access most areas of the Kimberley from Kununurra in a variety of ways.

Take a relaxing cruise or canoe down the Ord River or on Lake Argyle. Try your luck fishing for barramundi. Visit the rugged Bungle Bungles or fly over the magnificent coastline. Swim in the many fresh water holes under cascading waterfalls or view Aboriginal rock paintings.
