Broome

Broome is an idyllic destination located in Western Australia’s tropical north. Established in the late 1800’s Broome was a lively pearling port and today it boasts a multicultural population made up of many nationalities.

Broome is still famous as a pearling town and you can visit exclusive and exquisite pearl shops as you walk around the town.   In its heyday, over 400 luggers worked the shores of Roebuck Bay and today the remnants of Broome’s historical past are everywhere.

Take time to explore and soak up the special feeling. View pristine beaches and bays fringed with glistening white sands, craggy red cliffs and azure waters of the Indian Ocean. Take a walk through the town viewing the unusual style of colonial/asian architecture evident through Broome’s bustling Chinatown.

Cable Beach is probably Australia’s best known tropical beach. Located just out of town it is renowned for it’s endless stretch of white sand and tidal waters that can rise and fall up to 10 metres a day. Be sure to stay for the incredible sunsets over Cable Beach that turn the Indian Ocean into a majestic kaleidoscope of colour.   The climate is something to boast about, warm sunny days, romantic balmy nights making it easy to slip into “Broome Time”. Just some of the wonders of this coastal delight!

Staircase to the Moon

This natural phenomenon is caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats in Roebuck Bay at extremely low tide, to create  a beautiful optical illusion of a staircase reaching to the moon.

Occurs March through to October 2008.

Kununurra

Kununurra is the eastern gateway to the Kimberley, the home of outback adventure. Kununurra was gazetted in the early 1960’s as a service town for the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. It is now progressing rapidly through agriculture, tourism and mining.

The climate in Kununurra and the East Kimberley can be split into two seasons, ‘the wet’ and ‘the dry’. The dry season extends from around April to October with lovely clear days, cooler nights, brilliant blue skies and magnificent sunsets. The remaining months from November to March are dominated by monsoonal weather. Conditions are hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms causing heavy rainfall, an extremely exciting time of year.

Kununurra is an ideal base for an adventure holiday using one of the many 4WD, cruise or flight operators based in the area. Visitors can access most areas of the Kimberley from Kununurra in a variety of ways.

Take a relaxing cruise or canoe down the Ord River or on Lake Argyle. Try your luck fishing for barramundi. Visit the rugged Bungle Bungles or fly over the magnificent coastline. Swim in the many fresh water holes under cascading waterfalls or view Aboriginal rock paintings.
